PhD Studies

Information about the Earth Science PhD Programme at the Faculty of Earth Sciences of the University of Silesia – recruitment criteria for the academic year 2017/2018

Doctoral students are recruited through interviews.

Candidates are required to submit the following documents (in a white folder):

  • PhD Studies Admission Application (addressed to the Head of Doctoral Studies /Kierownik Studiów Doktoranckich/), and when relevant, PhD Scholarship Application, and Application for Scholarship Increase (addressed to the Head of Doctoral Studies, Damian Absalon, PhD)
  • Copy of master’s degree diploma (and for persons who completed a two-cycle education – diplomas for both cycles)
  • CV with brief description of scientific interests and information about previous research and organisational activities (e.g. academic papers, participation in conferences, research activities, membership in student clubs, student organisations, etc.)
  • Three photographs,
  • Photograph in digital format (400×500 pixels, max 100kB ) sent to
  • medical certificate (issued by an occupational physician) stating that the candidate is fit for doctoral studies in the respective field of studies and research discipline
  • photocopy of identity card (both sides)
  • an opinion issued by a senior member of the academic staff including his/her written consent to be the doctoral candidate’s supervisor and the project proposal
  • summary of the future doctoral dissertation

Doctoral students are supervised by senior members of the academic staff of the Faculty of Earth Sciences representing the specialisation which covers the proposed doctoral dissertation.

Type of studies:

  • full-time + scholarship
  • full-time with no scholarship

During the 4 years of study, a doctoral student must get credit for 70 hours of compulsory lectures and 50 hours of optional lectures, which they choose from a list proposed by the Faculty, as well as 60 hours of doctoral seminars. In addition, a full-timer is required to teach at least 10 and not more than 90 hours of classes annually.

The lectures are taught in the afternoon (from 16:00 Monday through Friday, and from 10:00 hours on Saturday) according to a pre-determined schedule
